About CompareText
I created this website because I realized how common a task it was for me to compare text, whether it was a document or hundreds of lines of code. Existing tools weren't purpose-built for quick comparisons and I was wasting a lot of time trying to solve such a simple issue.
I created CompareText both to save myself time, and to save the time of thousands of others that just want to do a simple comparison.
How the comparison works
You paste two versions of a text and click Compare Text. CompareText finds the smallest set of changes between the two texts, highlights the exact characters that differ inside each changed line, and recognizes blocks of lines that were moved rather than rewritten. Long runs of identical lines are collapsed so the changes are easy to find, and you can read the result side by side or as a single unified column.
Principles
- Free, with no account. Paste, compare, done.
- Nothing is kept unless you share it. Text is compared and returned, not stored, unless you click Share to get a link. The privacy page has the details.
- Works everywhere. Any modern browser on any device, and the comparison itself works even with JavaScript turned off.
- Built for real documents. Long files and thousands of lines are fine.
Feedback
Found a bug, or a comparison that looks wrong? Use the contact form. Reports with the two texts involved are the most useful.
